10 Essential Oils You've Never Used (And How to Use Them)

With so many choices in the world, most people stick with what they know rather than exploring new options. Essential oil users are no different, which is why we’ve curated a list of the best EOs you might have never used. At EG, we hope trying new oils is the beginning of a deeper, more satisfying aromatherapy experience. Disclaimer, you may have used these oils before.

You’ve never used...

Cajeput: A relative of Tea Tree, Cajeput has many similar characteristics to Tea Tree and Eucalyptus. It’s aroma is bright, medicinal and camphorous. This oil offers respiratory support and relief for muscle soreness.

Add 70 drops Cajeput, 20 drops Peppermint, 20 drops Clove and 15 drops Cinnamon Leaf to a 5 ml bottle for a two-in-one muscle relief and immune boost blend.

Celery Seed: A popular pick in the produce aisle but not in aromatherapy, Celery Seed has a unique spicy, root-like aroma. Celery Seed is commonly used for digestive and circulatory issues.

Combine 8 drops Celery Seed, 6 drops Geranium and 4 drops Thyme with 2 Tbsp of Tamanu carrier oil to improve circulation.

Cistus: Cistus is emotionally grounding and often inhaled during prayer and meditation. In perfumery, it’s used as a fixative for its deep-balsamic, peppery aroma. Cistus is effectively applied in skin care for its ability to reverse the look of mature skin.

Mix 3 drops Cistus, 2 drops Sandalwood and 1 drop Rose Geranium in 2 Tbsp of Prickly Pear Seed carrier oil and apply to the face as part of your morning or nightly skincare routine.

Cognac: Like the liquor, Cognac has a wonderful fruity, spicy, aged aroma and makes a great addition to natural soaps and candles. Cognac essential oil may be sedative and analgesic, based on the fact that it is made up of mostly esters.

Blend together 7 drops Cognac, 5 drops Amyris and 3 drops Vanilla in 2 Tbsp of Jojoba carrier oil for a musky, woody cologne.

Davana: Known for its ability to change aromas when used topically on different people, Davana has a sweet, watermelon-like aroma. Davana may offer symptom relief during PMS and menopause, making it an aid to women’s health.

Add 2 drops of Davana to a roll-on bottle and top off with Fenugreek carrier oil. Apply to pulse points, abdomen and back for PMS and menopausal comfort.

Elemi: A native of the Philippines, Elemi is a relative of Frankincense and Myrrh. It’s resin is steam distilled to create the deep, citrusy, piney oil we know and love. This oil has the ability to nourish skin, aid in respiratory health and decrease pain.

Put 1 drop Elemi and 1 drop Ravintsara in a large bowl of hot water. Place your face over the bowl and cover your head with a towel. Inhale the steam for five minutes to open air passageways and clear congestion.

Galbanum: Used in ancient Egypt and by early physicians such as Hippocrates, Galbanum has sustained time as a unique healing oil. Its aroma is known for being extremely herbaceous and green. Galbanum is commonly used for skin healing and nourishment.

Combine 1 drop of Galbanum to 1 teaspoon Rosehip oil. Apply to face, neck and the back of hands to firm and tighten skin.

Goldenrod: Goldenrod was a staple in early Native American medicine. Its aroma is grassy, earthy and adds a clear green note to perfumes. Goldenrod is multifaceted, offering allergy relief, antiseptic properties and arthritis support.

Add 2 drops Goldenrod to a personal inhaler for allergy relief.

Ledum: Also known as Labrador Tea, Ledum oil is distilled from a flowering herb. With a peppery aroma, Ledum has uses in rejuvenating massage blends and may be an effective decongestant.

Add to a 2 ounce squeeze bottle 8 drops Ledum, 2 drops Tea Tree, 5 drops French Lavender and 5 drops Niaouli, then fill with Jojoba oil and shake to mix well. Apply to the skin after bath or for full body massage.

Opoponax: A relative of Frankincense and Myrrh, Opoponax is extracted from the resin of the Opoponax tree. Its aroma is balsamic, musky and likened to Frankincense. Opoponax is known for its skin healing, decongestant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Mix 32 drops Opoponax, 20 drops Frankincense and 20 drops Myrrh in 4 oz of unscented lotion (formulated to have additional ingredients such as EOs added) for a resinous, skin healing moisturizer.
