Which Essential Oils Should I Use For Mature Skin?

As the years go by, wisdom increases, perspectives shift and, like growth rings on a tree, we gain wrinkles and lines. This leaves many wondering, can you enjoy the former without having to endure the latter?

Aging is inevitable, but doing so gracefully is a choice. We want to make that choice easy by offering tips and information on keeping your skin looking ageless, naturally. Here’s how.

How Skin Changes With Age

Before we dive into how to maintain youthful-looking skin, let’s explore the biggest offenders in skin maturing.

Free Radicals

Through pollution, exposure to UV rays, smoking and dust, our bodies are subjected to free radicals daily. After a while, free radicals take their toll by damaging skin-cell membranes and causing premature aging. How so? Free radicals attach to healthy skin cells and cause oxidative damage which in turn can inhibit collagen production, induce hyperpigmentation and damage elastic fibers.

Inflammation

Inflammation can be a double-edged-sword. While it’s the body’s natural response to repairing tissues and preventing infection, it can also disrupt skin depending on how long the inflammation lasts and its intensity. What’s more, long-lasting inflammation can lead to developing wrinkles and lines.

Collagen Synthesis

One hurdle in aging is that your body begins to produce less collagen and elastin synthesis, especially around menopause. These two elements are key to skin firmness and elasticity.

Traditional Anti-Aging Methods

The most common methods of keeping skin youthful and aglow include the use of cosmetics and procedures such as surgery and botox, and stats show that these traditional methods are quite popular.

According to market researchers, the anti-aging industry was estimated at $14.2 billion in 2020 and this number is expected to increase exponentially in the coming years. What’s more, surveys have shown that an average of 62% of US consumers use anti-aging products in their daily skincare routines.

Still, despite big investments on anti-aging treatments, surveys show that people largely do not believe anti-aging products are effective, perhaps due to a lack of desired results.

Essential Oils For Mature Skin

Due to a need for more effective pro-aging products and a desire for a pain-free, natural alternative, more people are turning to essential oils as a solution.

Antioxidant-Rich Oils For Skin

Free radicals can wreak havoc on our skin. The good news? Certain essential oils and plant-based ingredients are antioxidant-rich and can prevent and reverse oxidative damage. Here’s what to reach for if you’re looking to give your skin it’s daily dose of antioxidants:

Anti-Inflammatory Oils For Skin

  • Lavender: The mother of essential oils, Lavender has been used medically for millennia. A 2002 review of relevant scientific literature on Lavender confirms this wonder oil’s antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Frankincense: A study analyzed the anti-inflammatory potential of α-pinene, found abundantly in Frankincense, and discovered that it helped to effectively prevent and reduce inflammation.

  • German Chamomile: In a summary of current findings on German Chamomile, Professor Janmejai Srivastava and his colleagues note one reason for Chamomile essential oil’s efficacy at soothing upset skin: “chamomile flavonoids and essential oils penetrate below the skin surface into the deeper skin layers,” delivering their anti-inflammatory effects where they’re most needed.

Need a carrier oil to go along with that? Choose from any one of our anti-inflammatory carrier oils:

Collagen Boosting Oils

In a study on the skin-healing potential of topical plant oils, Argan was found to be uniquely effective at improving collagen and elastin production. Other oils, including Coffee, Cinnamon and Coconut oil were also discovered to be beneficial to mature skin in this way. So drink your daily cup of coffee, then double up by diluting and applying Coffee oil topically.
